Downieville is a hustling and bustling town of 325 people and the County Seat. Located on the confluence of the Yuba and Downie Rivers at an elevation of 2800 feet, it is a lovely little riverside mountain town. It is the home of the Fourth of July parade and the mountain bike mecca of the Sierra.All Sierra County offices can be found here as well as the Superior Court and the Western Sierra Medical Clinic. The drive along historic Highway 49 is a delight to the senses whether you are driving your ragtop or riding your Harley.
Sierra City
A little further upstream is the lovely little alpine town of Sierra City, gateway to the Lakes Basin Recreation Area. This is the land of many lakes and streams and the Pacific Crest Trail as well as Sardine, Packer and Salmon Lake Lodges and numerous private camps. Sierra City has that delightful mountain feel with views of the Sierra Buttes and the surrounding valley.Henness Pass Road
The quiet towns of Pike and Alleghany are found along the historic Henness Pass road which was a major thoroughfare during the Gold Rush. This road stretches from North San Juan and goes east through Weber Lake and Jackson Meadows across Highway 89 and on to Verdi and Reno, Nevada.Winter Activity
In the winter, both the Lakes Basin and the Henness Pass area are groomed for snowmobiles, snowshoes and x-country skiing.Recreation
